The Letter That’s Totally Ghosted U.S. State Names

The Letter That’s Totally Ghosted U.S. State Names

You ever get curious about weird facts for no reason?
Yeah — same.

So here’s a strange one:
There’s a single letter in the entire alphabet that doesn’t appear in the name of any U.S. state. Not even once.

Go ahead, scroll through the 50 states in your head.
Nope. Still won’t find it.

Let’s play elimination:

  • Z? Arizona’s got it covered.
  • X? Texas and New Mexico said “hi.”
  • J? New Jersey is right there.
  • Even Q—wait, no. Actually, Q is just… gone.

Yep. It’s Q. The Lonely Letter.

You won’t find Q in any of the 50 U.S. state names.
Not at the beginning, not buried in the middle. It’s like Q didn’t get the invite to the naming party.

Which is kinda wild, considering how many Qs there are in Scrabble.

But Why?

No official reason — it just sort of happened.
Most state names come from Native American languages, or have roots in Spanish, French, and English. Apparently, none of those cultures were into the letter Q when it came to naming territories.

It’s not a plot twist. Just a funky little linguistic fluke.

Tell Your Friends. Confuse Them.

Next time you’re at a dinner party, casually ask:

“Hey, can you name the one letter that’s not in any U.S. state name?”

Watch people scramble, throw out guesses, argue about it, and then… boom — you drop the Q-bomb.

You’re welcome.

And While We’re Nerding Out…

  • M is the most common starting letter (eight states!)
  • Z only appears in Arizona
  • X? Just Texas and New Mexico
  • No state starts with B, oddly enough

The alphabet works in mysterious ways.

So Here’s to Q

Uninvited. Unused.
Still kind of iconic.
